A project for the redevelopment and upgrading of two schools and their communities, to improve pride in local public identity and reduce vandalism. The project required a responsive and collaborative process, undertaken between the design professionals, the staff, the students and their extended families. Art for art’s sake was seen as inappropriate in this context. Instead, art and design works were developed with the communities, inside and outside the schools. Their sense of place and identity was then integrated throughout the design for infrastructure and amenities. The project won national and state awards including the national Sir Zelman Cowen Award for best new public building in Australia, the national Community Environment Art and Design Award, Civic Trust Award and BHP Award among others.
Artists Team: Julie Blyfield, Martin Corbin, Marijana Tadic, Greg Johns, Louise Haselton, Andrew Stock. Margaret Worth, as Art Projects Director + Artist Team Co-ordinator, collaborated with Patricia Les, architect SACON.
